The Orton-Gillingham Approach
The Orton-Gillingham approach began in the early 20th century when Dr. Samuel T. Orton, a neuropsychologist and pathologist at Columbia University, and Anna Gillingham, an educator, and psychologist, collaborated to address reading difficulties in children. Their combined expertise and innovative techniques led to the development of this highly effective method for teaching reading, spelling, and writing.
The Orton-Gillingham Approach is a language-based, structured literacy approach to teaching reading, spelling, and writing, particularly for individuals with dyslexia. This method includes structured, sequential, cumulative, flexible, and multisensory instruction. It integrates visual, auditory, and kinesthetic (tactile) learning to help students make connections between sounds and letters. It emphasizes personalized instruction, adapting to each learner's unique needs and pace.

- Online Tutoring: A Highly Effective Alternative to Onsite Services Online tutoring can offer several advantages and be just as effective as traditional onsite services: - Provides secure, live, face-to-face online video sessions. - Eliminates the stigma associated with being pulled out of class. - Offers flexibility to accommodate a student's busy schedule. - Removes the need for parents to travel and wait during sessions. - Provides a less distracting environment for better focus. - Creates a setting where students feel less intimidated and more engaged.
Although teletherapy is highly effective for most students, some children may find greater benefit from in-person sessions with cueing. Georgia S. Kalomiris
Orton-Gillingham Reading Specialist
Hello! My name is Georgia and I am a passionate teacher with over ten years of experience in education and dyslexia therapy. I have received a Master’s Degree in Elementary and Special Education and have worked with students in grades K-8 since 2009, providing individualized instructional support in Reading and Writing.
As a Certified Orton-Gillingham Instructor, I decided to pursue this specialized approach after recognizing the struggles many students faced with reading. My drive to find an effective literacy support method began when I observed that reading difficulties were hindering students’ progress across all subject areas. In 2014, I furthered my education to become certified in the Orton Gillingham Approach due to its proven systematic, structured, and multi-sensory instruction method. I’ve observed remarkable improvements in children’s reading fluency and writing abilities, and it’s incredibly rewarding to see their confidence grow as they master these essential skills.
Driven by a commitment to growth and progress, I enjoy supporting students and helping them overcome challenges to achieve their full potential. I believe all children are capable of achieving their goals when given individualized tools and support throughout their learning journey.
I try to create an engaging learning environment that fosters curiosity and a love of learning and look forward to working with you and your child to support their educational journey!
